We are often told by parents: Don’t spend more than you have. It seems that the people who run several big US companies never learned that lesson.
Over the past weeks, a number of US banks have gone out of business. Millions of people have lost their money. Thousands of workers have lost their jobs. The financial crisis(金融危机)that began in 2007 has taken a turn for the worse.
Experts say the crisis was caused by banks lending too much money. With rising oil prices and falling house prices, many people and companies who borrowed money have found themselves unable to pay it back. This has left the banks out of pocket.
However, the financial storm in the US is now affecting(影响)the rest of the world. Experts say that all other countries will suffer as a result of the weakness of the US economy(经济).
If so, China will be one of the first countries to hurt. Only Japan has lent more than China to the US. Moreover, the US is the second largest buyer of Chinese goods. China will suffer a great loss(损失)if Americans have less money in pockets to spend on Chinese goods.

For your next trip, why not visit Singapore? Singapore is a small city to the southeast of China. There are many things to do and see there. It doesn’t have any beaches or mountains, but it has a very large zoo, a beautiful plant garden, and lots of museums. It is also a wonderful place for shopping.
Don’t plan on driving a car in Singapore. The traffic is heavy in some parts of the city, and most cars are not allowed in the centre of the city. If you decide to visit Singapore, bring enough money. Living in Singapore is quite expensive. Also, pack light clothes. Singapore is very hot all year round.
B
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson lived in a big crowded city. One summer they had holidays in a small town. They enjoyed it very much because it was a quiet, clean place and very different from the city.
One day, they went for a walk early in the morning and met an old man. He lived on a farm and he was sitting alone in the sun outside his front door. Mr. Wilson asked him, “Do you like living in such a quiet place?” The old man said, “Yes, I do.” Mr. Wilson said, “What are the good things about it?”
The old man answered, “Well, everybody knows everybody else. People often come and visit me. I often go and visit them. And there are also lots of children here.” Mr. Wilson said, “That’s interesting. And what are the bad things?” The old man thought for a minute and then said, “Well, the same things really.”
