  Return From Space
The vacation’s over for American space tourist Richard Garriott. On Friday, the 47-year-old computer games designer returned safely to Earth after a 10-day visit to the International Space Station (ISS). The capsule(太空舱) carrying Garriott and two Russian astronauts successfully touched down near the town of Arkalyk, in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan.
Garriott’s father, former NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, was there to greet his son on the ground. After the younger Garriott was pulled from the capsule, his father patted him on the head, and asked, “How come you look so fresh and ready to go?” To which Garriott replied, “Because I’m fresh and ready to go again. What a great ride that was!”
Interest in space tourism has grown in recent years. Garriott is an investor in Space Adventures, a U.S. company that has organized all of the space tourist flights so far. Several other companies have also started investing millions of dollars to offer trips into space for clients who can afford the heavy price tag.
Garriott is the sixth private citizen to travel into space. On October 12, his vision of following in his father’s footsteps came true as he was blasted off aboard a Russian rocket, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Garriott is the first American to follow his father into space. The Austin, Texas, resident paid $30 million for the holiday in orbit.
But Garriott’s dream vacation wasn’t all play. He also carried out experiments including taking pictures of the Earth’s surface. In 1973, Garriott’s father took extensive photographs of Earth during his 60-day stay on the U.S. Skylab space station. Are you one of those who always fear whenever a dog is approaching? If you are, you have got phobia (a very strong feeling of being afraid of something). Of all human fears, phobias may be the most uncontrollable. They are most often caused by a particular situation or object. In general, phobias can mainly be divided into three varieties. To begin with, agoraphobia is a fear of staying in strange surroundings, for example, an unfamiliar place, or an open area. Social phobia refers to the anxiety people show when they have to stay or perform on social events, for instance, speaking in front of the class. Lastly, there are a wide range of specific phobias. People suffering from this kind of phobia are terrified of specific objects or creatures, such as spiders, perhaps to your surprise, clowns. Besides, there are about six hundred and fifty phobias having been listed by psychologists (心理学家) as yet.
Faced with their phobias, many people choose to do nothing but just escape the situations or objects they fear. Psychologists, however, warn that if not treated properly, this kind of anxiety will get worse, so that it may disturb the sleep pattern, cause physical symptoms, and finally affect their daily activities. As for treatment, clinical research has discovered that medicine for anxiety is not successful in curing phobias. However, the anxiety disorders can be efficiently treated through cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法), through which patients are led to inspect the connections between their own fear and the situation or object, and then actively choose the acceptable treatments. Also, other treatments proved effective in reducing phobias are Meditation (quiet thought that can help people relax), listening to calming music, and so on.

There was once a rabbit who thought the more friends she had, the better. So she made many friends. She even thought she was the most popular animal in the world.
One day the rabbit heard hounds(猎犬) baying not far from her. Usually, she hurried away at the first sound of a baying dog. But this time she didn’t want to run for her life as before. “I have so many friends, and they could help me,” she thought. She decided to ask one of them to carry her to safety.
The rabbit asked the horse, “Please, dear friend, will you carry me away from the hounds?”
The horse answered, “I wish I could help you, but I have work to do for my owner.” Then the rabbit asked the cow for help. The cow answered, “I wish I could help you, but it’s almost milking time.”
The goat had something important to do, too. So were the sheep and the pig. Every animal the rabbit asked for help seemed to be occupied. Even the calf(牛犊) had no time for her. Each of her friends said, “I wish I could help you.” But all of them had some excuse that prevented them from helping her.
Sadly, the rabbit said to herself, “I have so many friends in the world, but why don’t they help me when I’m in danger?”
By this time, the hounds were getting closer. The rabbit didn’t have any time to think. She was forced to run for her life. She quickly took off and, luckily, escaped just in time.

  Crossroads International
  How do Crossroads work?
Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn’t want and give them to people who badly need them. We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena(福利) in Hong Kong, Mainland China, elsewhere in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. So Crossroads is just that: a Crossroads between need and resource.
  Who do we help?
The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets(预算). They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it. They can’t get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.
  How do we operate?
Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated(捐赠). Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight(货运), we ask transport companies to donate their services. Nobody in our organization receives a salary. Even our full-time staff works on a voluntary basis.
Those that donate goods and services:
  ·Factories ·Manufacturers
  ·Hospitals ·Hotels
  ·Educational Institutions·Households
  ·Transport Companies·Offices
  ·Other Charities
One resource that we are always in need of is people. While we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.
  What can we do?
We are always in need of people. We have a lot of tasks. If you are volunteering regularly, we can offer work in some of the following categories, some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate(提供) them.
  ·Clothing categorization
  ·Sewing
  ·Toy categorization
  ·Furniture handing
  ·Book categorization
  ·Driving
  ·Household goods categorization
  ·Office work
  ·Electrical goods categorization
  ·Book keeping
  ·Stationery categorization
